Murder in the Library!
St Cyres Celebrates World Book Day

Competitions were held throughout World Book Day 4th March in the Learning Resources Centre. Pupils submitted entries for best book review and also designed their own book covers. The winning entries were by Angharad Webb Year 7 for her book review and Carys Inker for best book cover, congratulations and well done! The main event ‘Murder in the Library’, a book themed murder mystery, also took place in the LRC with scores of pupils from all years turning up to investigate the crime. Success for St Cyres Young Writers

St Cyres pupils entered the Young Writers competition ‘Mini Sagas’ a creative writing competition held annually for school children throughout the UK. Entries are judged on use of imagination, perception, expression and creative use of language. We were delighted to recently receive a letter from Young Writers advising that no fewer than 100 of our pupils have had their work chosen to be published in the next book entitled ‘Mini Marvels South Wales’. Many congratulations to all pupils involved, this is an excellent achievement. (10/03/2010)

Marie Curie Annual Collection

The annual collection for the Marie Curie Hospice once again took place in the school and, after several weeks of anticiaption, was again organised by the Year 10 pupils who have supported the charity so readily since they joined in Year 7. The usual pupils were joined by Dina Ismail and Sahra Arwo and gave up every break and dinner time throughout the collecting week. The fund-raising culminated in the Eisteddfod on the Friday when every pupil in the Lower School was encouraged to purchase a daffodil to wear. The Year 10 pupils are indebted to the younger pupils from the Dinas Powys site for their help. The collecting tins and buckets were returned to Marie Curie by the Penarth students - shown in the photograph with Mrs Karen Jones and Ms Georgina Burke from the Fund Raising Office. (09/03/2010)

Fair Trade Tea-Shirt Competition

The winner of the Fair Trade Tea-Shirt Competition is Sarah King in 8CLB. Her winning design incorporates a black background, a teacup and saucer and steam rising. This bold statement design strongly promotes the use of Fair Trade tea. Sarah will receive a Fair Trade T-shirt and her design will be printed onto t-shirts as advertisements during Fair Trade Fortnight. She will also receive a £5 voucher to spend at ‘A Class Apart’ The panel of three judges from Dinas Powys Fair Trade Group would like to thank all the students for their thoughtful ideas and found all the entries very interesting; second prize went to Jennifer Kerslake and third to James Haworth. James’ tagline, ‘Fairtrade Tea is Tea-riffic’ was a great idea. Both students will receive a £5 voucher. Some other design work was also highly commended by Rhys Lane, Dominic Curtis and Rhiannon Jeffrey all in year 8. The Fair Trade Foundation focus is on the Big Swap when it is hoped that 1,000,001 people will swap a normal product for a fair trade one e.g. bananas, chocolate, biscuits or whatever, but specifically with a focus on tea. Other age groups have been asked to design different things, again on a tea theme, and the intention is to exhibit everyone's work at the Parish Hall on Saturday 6th March. Mrs E Fisher (09/03/2010)

Penarth Town Fairtrade Forum

The AGM of the Penarth Town Fairtrade Forum took place on Friday 5th March and involved several of our pupils in major roles. Hannah Richards and Tomos Evans, both of Year 13, have served on the Forum for the last two years and, as they are now off to University, the members of the meeting, including Lorraine Barrett AM, Cllr Mark Wilson and representatives from local businesses, charities etc, thanked them for their consistent support and hard work over this time. Hannah had been elected as Publicity Officer in the last AGM and has proved to be an excellent ambassador both for the Forum and for the school. The meeting ended with a presentation by two of our Year 10 pupils, Rosa Greenburrows and Ruba Ashraf - both of whom were speaking in public for the first time. They gave an account of the work of the school in supporting the Fairtrade programme and were rewarded by a rousing round of applause for their infomrative and interesting talk. Well done girls - you also were excellent ambassadors for St Cyres School. The photos shows our students with some of the other guests and members at the meeting and Rosa and Ruba delivering their talk. (08/03/2010)
